Cross-Country Skiing takes the Win
Locals take first at the inaugural Winter Adventure Race of the year
[Kelowna, BC] — The snow kept falling throughout the day but that didn’t deter Shauna Connaughton or Jonathan Kettle from taking first place at the first race of the Winter Adventure Race Series at the Kelowna Nordic Centre this Saturday, January 6, 2024.
The challenging course, created by Nathalie Long from Adventure Immersion Lab, saw competitors cross country ski and snowshoe to collect a total of 28 checkpoints throughout 28 kilometres of ski and 18 kilometres of snowshoe trails. Some checkpoints were to be collected on skis only while others were snowshoe only, so competitors had the choice to ski, snowshoe, or both.
...
Overnight and throughout the day more than 6 inches of snow fell, making the skiing and snowshoeing that much more challenging.
“I had a great time at Adventure Immersion event!” said Connaughton. “I Forgot how much beautiful terrain [Kelowna] Nordic has and it was awesome to rediscover our backyard. The extra snow made for some slow, challenging conditions, but that just added to the challenge of trying to optimize checkpoints or choose between skis and snowshoes. It’s also a beautiful backdrop. A great start to 2024!”
