How to download and use Avenza Maps on your smartphone

  1. Download the Avenza Maps app from the App Store / Play Store. 

  2. Find the Kelowna Nordic Ski & Snowshoe maps on Avenza by:

    • Searching with the keywords “Kelowna Nordic”, or

    • Browsing by activity, such as “Skiing”

  3. Press the green “Free” button under the desired map to download it.

  4. The downloaded map(s) will be in your Library.

  5. When you’re on the trails, open the Avenza Maps app, click on Library and select your desired map (Ski or Snowshoe).

  6. A blue dot will appear on the map in your location (assuming you’re somewhere on the map).

  7. Touch your screen somewhere on the map and a banner should appear along the bottom.

  8. Click on the Tools (pencil/ruler) icon in the left corner and a menu of various options appears. 

 

Steps to navigate to a destination

  1. Select "Navigate to Destination" from the list.

  2. Choose a navigation method:

    • Enter Coordinates: Select "Enter Coordinates" to manually input a latitude and longitude for your destination.

    • Navigate to Feature: Choose this option to select an existing placemark, line, or other feature already on your map.

    • Project Destination: Use this to set a destination based on a specific heading and distance.

  3. Start navigating: After selecting your method, a line will appear on the map from your current location to the destination.

  4. View navigation details: Swipe up the bottom toolbar to see statistics like speed, distance to the destination, and estimated time of arrival. The toolbar can be swiped down to hide the compass and see a larger map view

Steps to record your route

 

  1. Select “Record GPS tracks” if you want to see a coloured line where you’re travelling on the map.

  2. When you’re back in the parking lot, you can stop recording and decide whether you want to keep a record of your route on your map, or delete it. You can also decide to delete a route later by clicking on the line showing your route and choosing delete.

When you’re on the trails, open the map and look for the blue dot marking your position (you must have a smartphone with GPS technology). Select the Tools (pencil and ruler) icon for more options.
